Samarium is intended to be a tool to help in the electromagnetic design of three phase, brushless, radial field, surface mounted, permanent magnet, DC motors. It can handle slotted and slot-less motors, inner rotor, and outer rotor motors, and different magnet geometries. Since January 2010, It also supports buried permanent magnet rotors with spoke type orientation.

The software is to be used as a tool and it is the responsibility of the user or designer to check several parameters so that the design makes physical sense. Samarium does not have any artificial intelligence built into it, it is only a fast number cruncher of certain equations. If the input data is incorrect it is easy to end up with a poor design. The user must be cautious and responsible especially when designing new motors that certain key parameters make physical and electromagnetic sense.
